lots to westward of Holts' for nearly the whole of the bots acquired by Government to the north of Salisbury Road, together with the Police Camber, and a considerable strip along the south side of Salisbury Road, with the addition of a sum of about four
lakhs, and also a large area of Crown Land north of Salisbury Road and between Canton and Hankow Roads, the whole valued at $1,350,199. I requested Messrs. Pollock and Murray Stewart to
negociate as to this offer, and they have reported to me, that they are unable to obtain very substantially better terms than
those offered, which on the whole as amended they consider not
unreasonable. They are strongly of opinion that these lots
should be acquired for the Station and feared that unless
Government came to an early decision the opportunity might be
lost. They however considered that if it were possible to pro-
vide the money it would be much the best for Government to pur-
chase the lots in question without making any exchanges. It is
anticipated that the owners would be willing to sell for a sum
of $1,472,389.53 if the Police Camber is also given to them
(valued at $287,083.60). Mr. Chatham agreed with their view,
and I am myself inclined to concur also, since it is admitted
that the values asked are not excessive, and the land we own w
will probably increase in value. The proposals compare thus.
(Omitting the Camber common to both).
